How To Care For Your Hair Whilst Wearing a Hijab

Andressa Pisa

As a hijab wearing Muslim woman, it’s far easier for us to forget to take care of our hair because of the nature of it being covered most of the time. It’s not uncommon that Muslim women fail to realise just how deeply our hijab habits are contributing to the health of our hair. At Aab we believe it’s important to build an awareness around the types of materials and techniques we use whilst wearing our hijab and how that impacts the health of our hair. As ironic as it sounds, hair care is just as vital for Muslim women as it is for those who do not cover their hair, if not more.

So what steps can be taken to maintain and promote healthy hair whilst wearing a hijab?

Change your undercap regularly

By not changing or cleaning your undercap regularly, you’re effectively fostering a breeding ground for dandruff, sweat and grease to build up and cause irritation to your scalp. So, similarly to the way we wash our clothes or hijabs after 2-3 uses, you want to be doing the same for your undercaps. Aab’s new collection of undercaps coming soon are made out of our premium jersey material and are available in 7 different styles to suit different face shapes. Our undercaps were designed keeping the health of your hair in mind, using a material that is soft, breathable and helps to reduce the impact of headaches, irritation and straining on the roots of your hair.

Choose the right hijab material

We’re certain that most of us are guilty of buying into bulk hijab bargains, but at what expense? You may not realise it, but cheaper materials are in fact costing your hair much more in the long term. More often than not, synthetic materials such as polyester can cause your hair to get greasy and leave your scalp at risk of irritation. Instead, opt for our range of high quality hijabs, that are made out of natural materials such as silk and cotton, which are far more gentle and breathable and also promote healthy hair. Always keep in mind that your choice of material can ultimately make or break your hair.

Dry your hair thoroughly before putting on your hijab

Lastly, always give yourself time to thoroughly dry your hair before putting on your hijab. We’ve all been there where we’ve had no choice but to leave our homes with wet hair under our hijabs after a shower because we’re running late. But let’s not try to overlook that by tying up and keeping our wet hair under our hijabs for hours, we also risk hair breakage and split ends. We suggest washing your hair at a time that allows for natural drying time. Try to align the times you wash your hair during a time, in the day or week, where you know there won’t be any pressure that prevents you from drying it after. If not, we recommend using a dryer on a low or cold setting to speed up the process.
